A green smoothie that tastes good and is good for you, perfect for every day …
My “basic green smoothie”
I don’t understand why I haven’t shared this recipe here earlier. Since the beginning of this year, this is my go-to recipe for breakfast. A fiber-rich, low sugar green smoothie, that takes me from morning to lunch totally hunger free.
I call it my “basic green smoothie” but in the best of senses. It’s the smoothie equivalent of the perfect white shirt: you’ll always be perfect, no matter the occasion 😉
The rationale behind the recipe
Fiber for a healthy gut
The first concern in creating this green smoothie was exactly the green component. With all the good that green leaves bring along: vitamins, minerals and, most of all, a lot of fiber for a healthy gut.
The recipe has a large amount of spinach and romaine lettuce. Even though they have a neutral flavor, the outcome is very fresh, perfect for “green smoothie newbies” 😉
Debloat and detox
Next, wanting to ease bloating and water retention led me to include cucumber and celery. Cucumber also helps with the smoothie’s consistency, not adding to the overall calorie count. Celery adds to the smoothie’s savoriness, gives it its character.
Pear is regarded as having calming and detoxing properties. Besides, I love the taste. So, as long as it’s pear season, they are my choice for this. Out of pear season, I go with an apple – you know, “an apple a day …”
Lemon: we are well aware of all the “alkaline” controversy, all of it true, all of it a lie … who knows. Meanwhile, I’m adding lemon juice as often as I can and here it just fits beautifully.
Healthy Fats
Last but not the least: one-quarter of avocado. Avocado plays a double role: its nutritional benefits and its impact on the smoothie’s consistency. It adds no sugar, as bananas would, but it just makes any smoothie a lot creamier. The fact that it is a healthy fat slows the smoothie’s digestion and keeps me (and you, when you choose to try it) hunger-free the whole morning.
About avocado: read HERE my latest post about all the nutritional benefits of this “it” fruit.
As a liquid, I add half a glass of coconut water or just plain water. The goal is to adjust the smoothie’s consistency to my liking and to promote good hydration. Also sugar-free.
And now, the recipe:
Green Glow Smoothie
Green Glow Smoothie: regular drinking this smoothie might give you ‘that’ glow 🙂
This recipe is enough for two large glasses. Drink the first one, mindfully, for breakfast and carry the second one with you, for a mid-morning pick me up.
Ingredients
- 1 cucumber, peeled and sliced
- 1/2 romaine lettuce, carefully washed and sliced
- 1 cup spinach
- 1 pear (or apple)
- 1 celery branch
- 1/4 avocado
- juice of 1 lemon
- 1/2 glass of coconut water (or plain water)
Method
Place the cucumber, the lettuce, the spinach, and the celery in your blender. Add the coconut water. Blend for a minute, until all the green leaves are incorporated into the liquid.
Add the remaining ingredients: the pear (or apple), the avocado and the lemon juice. Blend until smooth and creamy.
If you deem necessary, adjust your Green GLow SMoothie’s consistency with a bit more of coconut water.
And also…
I strongly encourage you to try this green smoothie out – it’s the perfect breakfast for those who want energy, easy digestion and also great glowing skin. I really hope you like it!
